The Oregon, Indiana connection

Oregon and Indiana have shared few political similarities over the years, but both states are working to change their fiscal strategies.

Last year, Indiana went for a Democrat for president for the first time since 1964, while Oregon — the most Republican state west of the Mississippi for much of the 20th century — favored a Democrat for the sixth consecutive election.

But Mitch Daniels and Ted Kulongoski have had to cope with ever-declining economic forecasts that have projected less money for state coffers — and often the latest forecast said the previous one was off by millions.
