Union Wine Company hopes to serve consumers looking for lower-priced wines in the Portland area by settling in Tualatin.

The hills of Dundee and the vineyards of Carlton -- more visible touchstones of the state's $1 billion wine business -- may lie miles to the west, but a new winery much closer to the Portland metro area makes perfect sense, its owners insist.

Especially in the midst of a larger economic recession, which has consumers searching for lower-cost wines than the $25-and-above pinot noir upon which Oregon's wine industry has staked its national claim.
