IDT pulling plug in Hillsboro

As the recession hits the chip industry, Integrated Device Technology announces plans to leave its Hillsboro fabrication facility and contract its manufacturing to a Taiwanese company.

The San Jose, Calif.-based company on Monday said the Hillsboro facility, which at its peak employed 380 people, can no longer produce leading-edge technology. Upgrading the facility would cost billions, an investment the company says it can't afford.

"You have to have equipment that can make chips that much smaller," said Chad Taggard, IDT's vice president of corporate marketing and strategic planning. "It costs $4 billion to build a new fab, and we can't afford to do that. We want to focus more on the design of the products."
