Portland's largest employer has had to make university-wide cuts - from staffing to campus maintenance - to survive damage caused by the economy and other financial blows.
The cumulative response from OHSU has been a code-blue financial intervention. It eliminated hundreds of jobs, backed off hospital expansion plans, merged departments and throttled back spending across the board.
The university maintains that it's turning a fiscal corner, but acknowledges that further adversity would compromise patient care, research programs and the quality of medical education.
