Port funds Tokyo flights

In hopes of bolstering international business, the Port of Portland voted to support Delta's service to Tokyo.

The novel deal, reached after extensive negotiations, shows how airlines are pushing airports nationally to share risks. But it's unlikely to be repeated, either in Portland or elsewhere internationally, according to managers of the Port, which runs Portland International Airport.

Bill Wyatt, Port executive director, said the one-time payment -- from general funds, using no tax revenues -- is intended to help sustain the transPacific flights until Delta can return to making profits on the route.
