10 BOLI jobs saved

The bill reverses the results a BOLI-approved budget that would have cut 10 jobs from the agency.

House Bill 5054, awaiting Gov. Ted Kulongoski’s signature, beefs up the enforcement of Oregon’s civil rights laws. BOLI, which investigates claims of workplace discrimination, regained two full-time and one part-time position in the Civil Rights Division. The bureau’s budget had called for cutting the equivalent of 1.25 civil rights investigator positions.

The changes reflect a renewed emphasis on both awareness and enforcement of labor laws. Early in the 2009 legislative session Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian told the Daily Journal of Commerce that getting his bureau’s Technical Assistance Unit state general fund money was a top priority.
