The Democrats who let this year's legislative session acted on the hope that Oregon's economy will improve soon.
Whether it was pushing an aggressive package of tax increases or turning aside Gov. Ted Kulongoski's plea to put money in reserves, the Democrats are betting their political futures on an economy that at least doesn't worsen."If the people feel like we're not making progress and getting to a better stretch (economically), I think they will take it out on us," admitted Rep. Peter Buckley, D-Ashland, the House's budget chief.
