The mayors of Portland and Vancouver, B.C. have signed an agreement to pursue a super-fast rail line through the Northwest. The project has gotten a boost from funds President Obama has dedicated to intercity high-speed rail. But the details are difficult:

The problem is the tracks have too many road crossings, curves, competing trains and other impediments to higher speeds.

Mayor Sam Adams and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson said they'd love to see super-fast trains someday, but will push for incremental improvements in the meantime.

"We want to make it really clear that were behind this and this is a priority," Adams said. "It's high speed rail and making more modest short term improvements that will significantly improve the speed and reliability of the rail connection."
