Wine glut possible

Oregon's wine industry is raising concerns about oversupply, as the state continues to expand grape production while wine sales drop.

Oregon wine sales were down 5% in volume in 2009 from the year before. Oregon wines tend to be more expensive, which make them less attractive to distributors.

'Not only are we producing more grapes, but more acres are coming online," said Ted Farthing, executive director of the Oregon Wine Board. 'We need to do a lot more work on the demand side."

Farthing and other wine experts recently gathered in Eugene to discuss the industry's outlook at an annual symposium.

Wine glut

I proudly sell ORE wines here in Colorado to restaurants and liquor stores. The problem here is that too many of restaurants and stores feel ORE wines are niche wines, they receive little shelf space, etc. even though when I work public tasting tables the public love the wines and repeatedly say they want to be able to find them. You need to directly compete against California wines. In our market the giants, Gallo, KJ, Constellation and others from California are taking over shelve space. Your wines, especially your whites are better than the offerings from California, your pinots as well. I would start doing trade events that place your best next to the best from california in each price point, much like when California wines won the paris tastings back in the 70s.
