Legislators to balance budget

Legislators will consider how to trim spending, or cut back on tax breaks, as the special session heads into its second week.

The budget needs to be balanced in order to make up for low tax collections and increased demands for state services.

Because the tax increases approved by legislative super-majorities were upheld by voters Jan. 26 in the form of Measures 66 and 67, that budget-balancing task is made easier. But lawmakers still have to make adjustments.

By Thursday, under the session rules, most legislative committees will have to complete action on bills in their chamber of origin. Senate committees have to finish work on Senate bills; House committees on House bills.
