The Oregon Employment Department says delays in unemployment checks for former school workers are caused by the verification process that qualifies them for benefits.

School employees who have "reasonable assurance" of returning to work after summer break, or a holiday recess, are not eligible for unemployment.

Craig Spivey, a spokesman for the state employment department, said that checking to make sure former school employees qualify for unemployment can get complicated. The turnaround time can be 20 business days when an issue needs to be resolved, he said. That compares to the typical unemployment claim which is handled within 14 days.
