Portland's Laika gets Oscar nod; "Lincoln" leads the pack

Los Angeles Times: “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and “Lincoln” will both be vying for best picture and best director at the 85th Academy Awards ceremony, after Thursday morning’s Oscar nominations saw some shocking omissions, surprising delights -- and Oscar history being made. And Portland-based production company Laika was nominated for "ParaNorman" in the best animated film category.

Rounding out the nine best picture nominees are: “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Argo,” “Les Miserables,” “Life of Pi,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Amour” and “Django Unchained. The other nominees for best director are Ang Lee for “Life of Pi,” David O. Russell for “Silver Linings Playbook,” Michael Haneke for “Amour” and Benh Zeitlin for “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”

The nods put Spielberg on track to win his third Academy Award for best director and solidify his position as one of the industry’s most enduring filmmakers. Not that his standing was in doubt: Thursday’s nomination is his seventh best director nod. It’s an honor he has won twice before -- for “Schindler’s List” and “Saving Private Ryan.”

Noticeably missing from the best director nominees were Kathryn Bigelow for “Zero Dark Thirty,” Tom Hooper for “Les Miserables” and Ben Affleck for “Argo.” Just this week, all three were nominated for the Directors Guild of America Award -- considered a leading Oscar indicator.

The New Yorker recently published a sharply worded critique of “disruptive innovation,” one of the most widely cited theories in the business world today. The article raises questions about the descriptive value of disruption and innovation  — whether the terms are mere buzzwords or actually explain today's extraordinarily complex fast changing business environment.

Update: We checked in with Portland's Thomas Thurston, who offers his data driven take on the disruption controversy.
