Study: Diet soda helps weight loss

CNN: A study funded by the American Beverage Association showed that individuals who drank diet soda lost more weight compared to their counterparts who just drank water.

While the typical participant banned from drinking diet sodas lost 9 pounds over 12 weeks, those allowed to continue drinking diet soda lost, on average, 13 pounds in the same time period. That's a 4-pound difference.

Hill says that in his clinical experience, many people who have successfully lost significant weight "are heavy users of noncaloric sweeteners."

I would be skeptical of a study funded by the American Beverage Association that claims THEIR products help weight loss. You'd have to know the number of subjects, the controls, the diets used, and many other variables. Further the chemicals in some of the diet sodas have their own set of side effects and detrimental impact on health. On balance it's probably better to drink water than a host of chemicals.
