The 100 Best provide a thousand answers, large and small. The competition to be the best keeps getting tougher. In this year’s 12th annual 100 Best Companies to Work for in Oregon survey, 260 private and public companies, nonprofits and government agencies participated along with 29,049 of their employees. That’s the largest number of companies and employee participants since the launch of the 100 Best list. How do companies get on the list?

Wallowa County, in Oregon’s northeast corner, has had an up-and-down employment history. It gained jobs for the second consecutive year in 2005, but total nonfarm employment has yet to fully recover from previous losses.

Since early 2003, employment ads at Oregon newspapers, despite seasonal shifts, have been building steam. The drop in the unemployment rate from above 8% to below 6% during the period could be both a symptom of hiring activity and a hindrance to filling jobs.
