Continuing the Timberline Labor Day tradition of free live roots music, Timberline has again teamed up with the Boyd Coffee Company and the Mt. Hood Brewing Company to host an all day Mountain Music Festival on September 5, 2016. The festival, which takes place in the lodge’s historic outdoor amphitheater, is one of Timberline’s ways of giving back to the community and celebrating the wonderful mountain setting. This year’s lineup promises powerful performances from some of Americana music’s leading contemporary artists.
First up at 12:30 p.m. is Mt. Hood’s very own Eric Kallio. This local singer-songwriter accompanies himself on guitar, Dobro, and National steel guitar. He will share with us some songs inspired by his life here on Mt. Hood. As full-time caretaker of the Reed College Cabin in Government Camp, Kallio finds lots of quiet time to hone his skills as an excellent picker, and he finds inspiration for his songs by being close to nature. He will be singing songs from his debut CD, Glass, Wood & Steel.
A favorite on the bluegrass scene, Jackstraw will be kicking it up a notch at 1:00 p.m. as they return by popular demand to Timberline with their brand of “Northwest Mountain Music.” Jackstraw, who hails from right here in Oregon, is a perennial favorite on the summer festival circuit all over the nation. This five-piece band possesses a powerful and cutting edge blend of originals, bluegrass standards, old timey sounds, and classic honky-tonk country. We figured it was time to get them back on the Timberline stage so they can share some songs from a new (their 7th) CD that will be released this summer.
It is our special pleasure to present one of Americana music’s rising stars, singer-songwriter Caitlin Canty, performing at 2:15 p.m. Born and raised in Vermont, Caitlin is now based out of Nashville, and is in high demand on the concert and festival circuit. Her 3rd and breakthrough album, Reckless Skyline, was released this past January to rave reviews. It is a powerful collection of 12 songs that features great musicianship and her smoky vocals on a blend of country ballads, blues, folk, and catchy tunes like the irrepressible “Get Up,” which is nominated for Song of the Year by the International Folk Music Awards. She is currently on tour with Darlingside, a band that gave us a stand-out performance here last year. We are thrilled to have attracted Caitlin to perform here as she travels en-route to the Sisters Folk Festival.
Sam Baker will appear as a trio at 3:30 p.m. Sam’s music is poignant and powerful. Hailing from West Texas, complete with its cowboy sensibilities and a strong sense of individuality, he is also imbued with a larger world-view. With a personal near-death story of tragic loss at the hands of a Shining Path terrorist bombing in Peru in 1986, Sam’s music is powered by an enduring sense of purpose, and thoughtful insight into what it means to be human. His poetic lyrics have a strong literary element that ring true. In what is a refreshing enigma, his performances are not necessarily powered by particularly skillful musicianship, but they are captivating nonetheless. His raw delivery is emotional and straight from the heart. He leaves his audiences wanting to hear more, and sometimes speechless. A Sam Baker performance can be transformative. His latest CD, Say Grace, was named “One of the Top 10 Country Albums of 2013” by Rolling Stone Magazine.
Marley’s Ghost will bring it all home for us at 5:00 p.m. This crowd-pleaser band is a festival favorite all over the country. Hailing from the Seattle area, they capture the uplifting sounds of West Coast Americana music perhaps better than any other band. We have wanted to present them at Timberline for a long time now. This five-piece band of seasoned musicians recently celebrated their 25th anniversary with a tour de force album titled Jubilee, produced by Cowboy Jack Clement, and featuring guest performances with artists such as Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Old Crow Medicine Show, Marty Stewart, and Larry Campbell. Larry produced their latest album, which is to be released this summer.
Admission is free to the Timberline’s Mountain Music Festival. Enjoy Timberline’s food and beverages and bring an instrument to join in the jams led by the Taborgrass Players on the back “Pickin’ Patio.” No dogs or picnic lunches please. Music rain or shine – 12:30 p.m. to sunset.
