The book does not blame the poor or certain ethnic groups as Thoma tries to claim but rather the effort by perhaps wellmeaning but misguided individuals (Democrat and Republican) pushing homeownership to those who truly could not afford to pay for and maintain a home. They did this by reducing the standards for loans "stated income" and such baloney with the ends justifying the means. The banks and other financiers knew Fannie and Freddie would back these bad loans so they took no risk. Had Countrywide and others TAKEN ON THE RISK you can bet your bottom dollar they would not have made these shaky loans. The most egregious actions were on the part of Congressmen like Barney Frank whose "partner" was benefitting from his plush salary while he looked the other way as these agencies imploded. Not to mention the officials of Fannie and Freddie who walked away with golden parachutes. There are no angels in this play but to claim Republicans are blaming the folks who simply took advantage of what they thought was a free lunch is ridiculous. The blame rests with the greedy bankers, financiers and Fannie/Freddie execs. This is what the book says loud and clear.

I've read the book. It's impossible to NOT reach the conclusion that Fannie and Freddie were the primary cause of the financial crisis. The first six chapters are exclusively devoted to the GSEs. The rest of the book touches on other players but always comes back to the GSEs. For the authors to be claiming that this is a misreading of their book is ludicrous. As Thoma says, if that's their position they should be out correcting the record, not claiming their book says something it doesn't.
