Sure. Go to a sales tax. BUT, get rid of BOTH other taxes in Oregon. No more property tax, no more income tax. Clean break. If that can't be done, then NO sales tax...same as the last bazillion times they have tried to con us into passing a sales tax.

"Missed out on taxing tourists" in error

If income is taxed, and tourists bring income, then aren't the tourists taxed? How can a sales tax be any different than income tax? Why would we be in favor of ADDING a sales tax, when we are already taxed for their revenue? Don't fool yourselves into thinking a sales tax ON TOP OF INCOME TAX captures lost revenue, just adds revenues to be taxed!

Sales Tax?

You should have asked if it would be favored if one of the existing taxes were repealed. Oregonians do not trust government to implement a new tax and not raise it. By adding another tax you just increase income so the government can expand. This is not a panacea either. Look at Washington state. No income tax, but high sales tax and property tax that is as high as Oregon's. They are having budget problems also. In a recession income declines so spending drops.

We have been missing out on tax dollars from tourism in a big way, something we pay when we are out of state. We could seriously reduce the burden on Oregonians if we reduced income and property taxes and implemented a sales tax. It's just common sense.

It's time for a sales tax. Don't know how a sales tax could be levied on an underground economy but it sure makes sense otherwise.

you bet we need tax reform! If we would lower income and capital gains by about 1/2 and add a 5% sales tax, we would add over $1 billion of revenue to state coffers, as we capture the underground economy and tourist dollars. These are Dept of Rev stats, not mine!!
