Henry Selick, anyone?

Selick built this studio, and made his best film there. And they let him get away. Not one mention of him in this article. But the hiring of a middling ex-Dreamworks accountant to run the place is a particularly sad statement. Didn't work for Warner Brothers, or Sony, or Fox prior to Chris Wedge/Blue-Sky. Laika as a studio needs strong creative leadership, which it just doesn't have. They're making all the same dumb moves as every failed animation studio. No wonder they've lost so much talent over the few months. I doubt they'll be open much longer.

The Company Is Run Like Crap

Until they come with a viable business plan, and get rid of their industry-wide reputation as a company that lays off their staff due to mismanagement, they will have a difficult time getting top notch talent again. Here's an idea, Laika, be honest with your staff.

To be honest, LAIKA's the only game in town, so an animator will commute to where they have to (currently Hillsboro) to work in their chosen field AND be able to stay in Portland! Funny, you should bring up Tualatin: I haven't heard anything about that endeavor in well over a year.. Let us hope for a green light and a new project! Go LAIKA!

But here's the bigger question: Is Laika going to stick with that disastrous, ill-advised plan to build a corporate campus in suburban Tualatin, or will the company come to its senses and retain a headquarters in close-in Portland? I mean, how many talented young animators do you know who would rather commute for a half-hour to the 'burbs than walk to their job downtown or in the Pearl? It's not like these people are like to actually be living in Tualatin, unless they're moonlighting at Costco.
