Oregon home-building permits dropped 43% in 2008 and another 44% in the first seven months of 2009. Nationally, starts fell 35% in 2008 and 45% in 2009 year-to-date. Multi-unit buildings fared better in 2008 than single-family homes, but are down 51% in Oregon and 62% nationwide so far this year. Half of U.S. permits remain in the South, followed by the West, which lost 2% of starts to the Northeast between 2007 and 2008. The Midwest maintained 15% of starts.
