The results from our annual Private 150 ranking are understandably bleak, given that the economy has been in recession for nearly 20 months. Revenues and jobs for Oregon's privately held powerhouses fell steeply, with Big Timber continuing to take a beating, along with heavy manufacturing and auto dealerships. There were exceptions to the general downward trend, but the gains of the few were modest in comparison to the losses of the many.

The billion-dollar club shrank again, from nine companies in 2006 to six in 2007 and five in 2008, with North Pacific the latest Titan to move down a rung.

The hundred-million-dollar club also shrank, from 94 companies to 88. Timber, auto and heavy manufacturing companies slid the furthest. Hampton Affiliates dropped from 7th to 13th. Guaranty RV fell from 41st to 76th. West One Automotive plummeted from 55th to 79th. Ochoco Lumber tumbled from 93rd to 125th.

Others gained ground. Reser's Fine Foods jumped from 16th to 10th. Harder Mechanical rose from 52nd to 38th. Fortis Construction soared from 105th to 59th. Vigor Industrial jumped from 92nd to 57th. The Jubitz trucking empire rose from 94th to 66th. Slayden Construction jumped from 87th to 67th.

Unfortunately, improved results from construction firms can be misleading because of the lag time between winning projects and getting paid. Most construction companies are expected to fall further in 2009, along with the timber and automotive companies that prospered during good times. Tech and retail businesses are likely to bounce back sooner, although how soon remains to be seen.

I had no idea that companies were this successful. I am sure happy to see KettleFoods up there though; I just love their chips. They're so yummy! But anyways, thank you for sharing this because it was really interesting to read..
