The 100 Best Green Companies rankings were calculated by Oregon Business research editor Brandon Sawyer and research partner Davis, Hibbitts & Midghall based on confidential employee surveys and a report completed by each company. The green questions were asked during the 100 Best Companies survey last fall. It isn’t easy being green, but this year’s inaugural class of the 100 Best Green Companies to Work For in Oregon shows that if you’re committed to sustainable practices, it pays off not only for the environment and the bottom line, but also in being a great place to work.
100 Best Methodology The 100 Best Green Companies were selected based on sustainable practices sections from the 100 Best survey process, completed by 372 employers last fall. Participation in the 100 Best survey is voluntary and free of charge. Companies had to employ at least 15 Oregon workers at the time of taking the survey. Company representatives also answered 10 questions about their company’s sustainable business practices. The employee survey counts for half of a company’s score, out of a possible 100 points, with average employee satisfaction and importance ratings each representing 1/4 of the total. The employer benefits survey is also scored on a 100-point scale, accounting for the other half of the overall score, and resulting in a total possible score of 200. How to enter the 100 Best: To be considered for the 100 Best Green Companies, employers must sign up for the general 100 Best Companies survey. 1. Eligibility: Any private or public company, nonprofit or government agency with at least 15 Oregon-based employees is eligible to enter the survey. The company itself may be head- quartered outside the state. 2. Survey period: The process for 2010’s list will begin in August and end in October 2009. There is no charge to participate, and organizations that do not make the list will remain anonymous. All participants that complete the process can obtain survey results. 3. Submitting your workplace: Send an e-mail with the name, title, phone number and e-mail address of the person who will act as the 100 Best contact to: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Congratulations from all of us at RainTube
written by Steve Spratt Co-founder RainTube Technologies Inc. , June 04, 2009 5:34:56 pm PDT Congratulations to all the hard working green businesses out there. Although my company RainTube of Jacksonville Oregon manufactures a Gold Certified Cradle to Cradle product that is the highest rated green building product in the world according to GreenBuildingPages.com, we missed the cut to become one of the top 100 because we only have 7 employees based in Oregon. Nevertheless, we train and put to work 40 new independent contractors per month installing RainTube products around the word. So hey, small companies can make a big difference too! Maybe next year. report abuse

Reconsider Arciform for next year's issue
written by Anonymous , June 08, 2009 7:22:18 pm PDT The owners of this company recently chose to completely to take away all of their employee's vacation time as well as any and all previous paid holidays in the name of "saving jobs". This included employees who had worked for the company for over five years and had finally accumulated two weeks hard earned paid vacation. It wasn't until the employees checked into the state laws and found that this was illegal did the owners finally re-examine their decision. They think 'green' at this company alright.... money and profits before employees and their rights. report abuse

Arciform:
written by Scott Mumma, Consturction Coordinator, Arciform LLC. , June 18, 2009 9:58:50 am PDT As a 6 year employee at Arciform LLC, I can't tell you how proud I am that we ranked #32 on the list of Oregon's Greenest companies. What's even better is that the ranking is driven by the employees themselves! Their positive comments and ideas have driven our "green" success and I know that they are just as proud of this achievement as I am. As we all know this has been a challenging year in the construction/remodeling business. And we, as a remodeling and restoration company, have definitely felt the pinch. Many sacrifices have been made by everyone, including the company owners, to keep the lights on (compact florescent, of course). While this is NEVER an enjoyable thing to do, we all understands that if we all give a little we can minimize the downsizing that inevitably has to happen when revenue is down. Here at Arciform I'm proud to say, that in good times and bad, our commitment to recycling and green practices, as well as the long term commitment to our employees, remains a top priority. report abuse

Arciform:
written by Rian Moore , June 18, 2009 7:27:09 pm PDT I have never worked for a "green" company before Arciform. It's good to see that there is company that cares for the environment as much as it's employees. As a painter for Arciform I'm proud to say that we usa the lowest V.O.C paints. Always trying to minimize waste and recycling. We continually research new products and processes that are "green". This Is A Great Company! report abuse

What a Bunch of B.S.
written by Martin T. Wozich , July 05, 2009 9:31:29 am PDT I'm all for the careful use of resouces but this "green" paradigm is going too far. It is great that my accountant is the #4 most green enterprise in the state of Oregon but they are realistically not more "green" than any other accountancy that I've ever dealt with. The interesting thing about the green issue is the omission of any forest products companies from the list. Almost all of the industrial timber companies produce third-party certified green products. One would think that Oregon Business would promote one of our largest environmentally friendly industries. Is it just not "p.c" enough for Portland liberals? I hate to think about all the trees that gave up their lives to produce such drivel. report abuse

The 100 Best Green methodology
written by Robin Doussard , July 05, 2009 1:00:04 pm PDT Martin: The 100 Best Green Companies to Work for in Oregon list is a ranking based on employee satisfaction of how their company strives to be sustainable. It is a "great place to work" project, not a ranking of companies that produce green products. Companies elect to enter that survey, which is anonymous and also requires a company accounting of their sustainability practices, so we do not control who gets ranked. That is decided by the employees who work there. So if a forest products company does not enter the survey, it cannot be ranked. If you go to www.oregon100best.com you can learn more about the project. Robin Doussard, Editor, Oregon Business magazine report abuse

Sugarcane Paper
written by Paul Lewis , October 12, 2009 11:14:32 am PDT I believe all these companies that are on the list should look into using 100% TREE-FREE paper, which is made from Sugarcane and bamboo fibers. With the nearly 900 million trees harvested per year in the US, Multi-Purpose paper made from sugarcane fibers is a great way to preserve of forests and still use paper we are used to. This paper can be found at North Pacific - 877-692-1191...ask for Paul - Thank you! report abuse
