ELKTON — At about 148 residents, this tiny town most likely has more wine per capita than any other place in the country. Three wineries, Bradley Vineyards, Brandborg and Rivers Edge, produce thousands of cases of wine each year, further adding to Oregon’s status as a top wine producer. According to the Umpqua Valley Wineries website, temperate Northwest weather and a diversity of land types create an area naturally suited to the production of a variety of wines. Terry Brandborg, owner of Brandborg winery, says he and his wife relocated here California in 2002 because the climate is perfect for creating pinot noir. His location on scenic Highway 38 doesn’t hurt business either. He estimates 8,000 vehicles per day pass by during peak months on their way to the coast.
