More green kudos for Portland companies

PORTLAND Further boosting Portland’s eco-topian image, two local companies received nods in Outside magazine’s “green issue,” out this month.

New Zealand sportswear manufacturer Icebreaker, which moved its headquarters to the Pearl District last year, and homegrown outdoor clothing maker Nau earned shout outs as two of “11 industry leaders doing their part” for the environment. For what it’s worth, both also ranked higher on the magazine’s “GREEN-O-METER” than outdoor retailer REI (take that, Seattle!) and California-based clothing company Patagonia.

But if you, like us, are sick of singing the jolly praises of green giants, indulge your inner skeptic at www.greenwashingindex.com. The site, developed by Texas-based EnviroMedia Social Marketing and the University of Oregon’s journalism school,  provides an interactive forum for evaluating environmental claims made in ads. Bonus: Any trash you talk won’t make its way into the landfill.

Oregon already ranks as the nation’s second largest generator of hydroelectric power. (Washington is No. 1). Now an elegant new installation in Portland is putting an unconventional, sharing economy twist on this age-old water-energy pairing. The new system, launched this winter, uses the flow of water inside city water pipes to spin four turbines that produce electricity for Portland General Electric customers.
