No. 2 Medium Company: Sparling
At Sparling, a technology engineering and design consulting firm in Portland, leaders have created a "Day On" program that allows employees to volunteer in their communities for one day out of the year and still get paid. It's great philanthropy and also a great team-building when employees volunteer together. "Our long-term goals are clearly communicated, including business and cultural goals," says one employee. "The teamwork this fosters makes it a great place to work." Employees often must work overtime to make sure a project is completed. But the company promotes a healthy work-life balance by paying full overtime to salaried staff who work more than 40 hours in a week. Last fall the company, which has been a 100 Best winner for four years, also began offering on-site life strategies workshops for employees. One upcoming workshop: how to survive the financial crisis.

The issue of green-washing remains a significant challenge to those of us who would like to see the building sector in this country do more than make unverifiable claims of sustainability. Transparency about the impacts of a given material is the only way to allow designers to make intelligent choices when selecting building products.

Oregon is home to an abundance of gritty warehouses reborn as trendy office spaces, as well as crafty hipsters turned entrepreneurs. Does the combination yield an equally bounteous office products sector? Not so much. Occupying the limited desk jockey space are Field Notes, a spinoff of Portland’s Draplin Design Company, and Schuttenworks, known for whittling Apple device stands. For a full complement of keyboard trays, docking stations and mouse pads, check out the GroveMade line, guaranteed to boost the cachet of even the lowliest cubicle drone.

The 2016 presidential election is shaping up to be the year of the outsider, with Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump capturing leads in the polls and the headlines. In Portland, Wheeler vs. Hales is bucking the outlier trend.
