Oregon is indeed a blue state, at least where berries are concerned. State growers produced a record 72 million pounds of blueberries in 2012, the same year Oregon became the first U.S. state to export fresh blueberries to South Korea. But other berries are also bursting across the borders. While the value of the blueberry crop actually fell due to lower market prices, blackberries and cranberries enjoyed double-digit increases in value, and half the berry crops significantly increased in production. In 2011, blueberries were the state’s eighth most valuable commodity, followed by blackberries (19), and strawberries, cranberries and raspberries (36-38). Oregon was the No. 1 producer nationally of blackberries, loganberries and black raspberries, and the third leading producer of blueberries, red raspberries, strawberries and cranberries.
