Our 4th annual 100 Best Nonprofits to Work For in Oregon project celebrates great workplaces in the nonprofit sector. Nearly 5,000 employees and volunteers from 169 nonprofits statewide participated in this year’s survey.

The nonprofit project is based on Oregon Business’ 20-year-old, widely recognized 100 Best Companies project. The nonprofit project was created to recognize nonprofits as key businesses critical to the economic health of the state, employing hundreds of thousands of Oregonians.

There was no cost to enter the survey, and any organization registered as a nonprofit or not-for-profit or government group was eligible. Oregon Business research editor Brandon Sawyer, along with research partners DHM Research and The Nonprofit Association of Oregon, helped develop the survey and compile the results.

Here are the 2012 100 Best Nonprofits to Work For in Oregon as chosen by the people who count the most — the people who work there. We celebrate your great workplaces.

I was wondering, the guidelines say with at least 10 employees (and/or volunteers woh wor an average of 20 or more hours a month)...my question, besides your list showed companies with 2 or 3 or 6 employees, do the volunteers have to work at the non-profit an average of 20 hours a month for all 12 months? or just key months? Maybe when a conference or class or some other event is going on...I would like to enter our organization but we only have 5 employees and we do have some volunteers that work 20hours a month, but it may not be every month. Thanks for your question. If these volunteers are really part of the workplace team, familiar with your policies and, whether or not they work year-round, their average hours over the year add up up to about 220 hours per month/five hours per week, they can be included. We just don't want volunteers who are temporary or not really art of the team. The survey happens late April to June so they would need to be available then. They would participate in the survey except for the "Benefits and Compensation" section. Email me at if you have more questions or would like to be contacted next April.
