Business is brisk at the state’s privately held companies, with sales revenue increasing for the majority of industries.

Overall, annual gross revenues were up 6% for companies that reported financial results for the past two years. Average revenue for this year’s Private 150 is $252 million, a 4.6% increase on last year.

Growth was strongest in the construction sector, reflecting the real estate development boom in Portland and other parts of the state. Construction companies’ sales were up 19% on last year — the fastest-growing industry in the Private 150. Benefiting from the surge in construction are building materials companies and suppliers. Revenues popped 7% compared with last year.

Professional services companies also did well with revenue growth of 12%. Software firms had a 7.4% bump in sales. Sectors that saw moderate growth include retail (3%), health care (3%) and auto sales (1%). Revenues at forest-products companies increased nearly 4%. The sector is recovering from several years of negative to flat sales.

Not all areas of the economy expanded. Manufacturers, including high-tech, saw revenues dip 2.5%. Fuel distribution firms’ financials fell 4.6%.
