Marylhurst University invites the community to a series of free talks on issues of social justice. The Marylhurst Speaker Series convenes expert facilitators and speakers on pressing issues of our day, such as gender disparities, race and diversity, Oregon’s immigrant and refugee population, and more.

“Everyone is invited to come, listen and participate in meaningful conversations to imagine a better future for us all,” said Melody Rose, president of Marylhurst University. Dr. Rose will lead a talk on April 6 titled Leader of the Free World? The Future of American Women in Politics.

Several talks are part of Oregon Humanities’ Conversation Project. Through the Conversation Project, Oregon Humanities offers free programs that engage community members in thoughtful, challenging conversations about ideas critical to our daily lives and our state’s future.

The Marylhurst Speaker Series is hosted by Marylhurst University’s Department of Interdisciplinary and Applied Liberal Arts and made possible by the generous support of Oregon Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Oregon Cultural Trust.

Each of the speakers is available for interviews with the media. To request an interview, contact Karen Pederson, 503.699.6247, [email protected].

Leader of the Free World? The Future of American Women in Politics
Based on her 2010 book with coauthor Regina Lawrence, Hillary Clinton’s Race for the White House, Marylhurst University President Melody Rose will explain the three interlocking dynamics that are blocking the progression of women into the nation’s highest office. Based upon data from both the 2008 and 2016 presidential candidacies of Hillary Clinton, Rose examines gender norms, media protocols and election-specific contextual elements that prevented the ascendance of the first female president. Set against a global context of women’s rapid advancement, the case for full inclusion of American women into executive political office looks bleak. The presentation concludes with examination of new faces on the horizon, whose profiles and proficiencies might finally break the highest glass ceiling.

What’s in a Label? Thinking about Diversity and Racial Categories
As humans, we constantly label and categorize information on both conscious and unconscious levels. Labeling enables our brains to sort information efficiently, but the labels and categories we assign to information can form generalizations and stereotypes in our minds. When we allow stereotypes to define individuals, we fail to see the inherent diversity in humans. Race is a form of labeling. What are we describing when we assign racial categories to others and ourselves? How can we use language to increase understanding and connection, and what are its limitations? Join public interest lawyer Ann Su for a conversation exploring how the words we choose influence our understanding of race and racial diversity.
