Portland State University’s mathematics and statistics department got a $3.9 million boost.
Fariborz Maseeh, a Portland State University graduate and entrepreneur, donated $3.9 million to the school’s mathematics and statistics department.
The donation was made to expand and raise the profile of PSU’s computational science program.
The founder of a California micro-chip company, which he later sold, said he hopes to see his contribution over the next three years help Portland State become a regional leader in computational science. The science is used to create computer simulations for complex systems such as weather, the brain, oceans and freeways. Portland needs the innovation that comes from a strong university to thrive economically, said Maseeh, a first-generation American born in Iran.
“Innovate, and we will prosper,” he said.
