Technicians, sworn protective services and service maintenance are three job categories that employ fewer women in Deschutes County.

Among Deschutes County’s sworn protective services employees — a category that includes sheriff’s deputies, corrections deputies, detectives, evidence technicians, civil technicians and field law enforcement technicians — 118 are men and 11 are women. By contrast, the local work force available for these jobs in 2000 included about 18 percent women, according to the county report.

The Bend Police Department has a slightly higher ratio of female to male sworn law enforcement employees, with 10 women and 76 men working as police officers, said Capt. Jim Porter, the department’s patrol supervisor. Porter said the city actively recruits women for police jobs.
