NW Natural rates sink


State utility regulators approve double-digit decreases in natural gas rates.

Gas rates for NW Natural are expected to drop by 16 percent, a result of a poor economy and overflowing gas storage facilities.

Gas utilities pass their commodity costs through to consumers in rates. And every year, rates are adjusted to reflect the actual costs during the previous year versus the forecast the gas companies used to set prices.

In addition to lower-priced contracts for the coming year, the gas companies are passing along savings achieved in the last two months.
