The FTA approves $75 million to help fund the streetcar’s eastside extension.
$75 million from the Federal Transit Administration will fund half of the Portland Streetcar’s eastside extention, providing an economic boost to the area.
Peter Rogoff, Federal Transit Administration chief, signed a contract that guarantees the money Portland-area agencies have anticipated for the project, which started construction during the summer. The $150 million extension will run from the Pearl District across the Broadway Bridge to Lloyd Center and south to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.
The money was delayed for years by the Bush administration, which funded bus rapid transit projects but blocked streetcars. But Rogoff said the Portland project is a model for the Obama administration’s interest in growing “livable communities” projects that combine rail transit — specifically streetcars — and urban development across the nation.
