Signs indicate economic uptick


Despite the jobless situation, some say there are signs that Portland’s economy is improving.

An increase in temporary jobs and strip-mall tenancy are just a few indications that Portland’s economy may finally be improving.

“Temp” workers are often the first to get axed when a recession hits and the first to nab jobs when a turnaround arrives.

So it’s a hopeful sign that the number of temporary jobs in the Portland area has grown in four of the past five months, says Amy Vander Vliet, regional economist for the Oregon Employment Department.
