Daimler Trucks North America CEO Martin Daum joined President Barack Obama at an announcement to push for new fuel efficiency standards.
Obama said the new standards will save businesses with commercial vehicle fleets about $50 billion in fuel costs over the life of the program.
Under the new proposal, trucks and buses built in 2014 through 2018 are projected to reduce oil consumption by 530 million barrels and greenhouse gas pollution by 270 million metric tons.
The standards were developed by the EPA and the U.S. Department of Transportation in coordination with companies affected by change in standards, including Daimler Trucks North America, a subsidiary of German auto-maker Daimler A.G.
As such, the proposal has met the approval of Daimler officials in Portland, where the company manufactures the Western Star brand of trucks as well as Freightliner-branded military vehicles.
