Uwajimaya pulls out of Old Town


Seattle-based Asian grocer Uwajimaya will no longer be part of a mixed use project in Old Town Portland that has been in the works for years.

Seattle-based Asian grocer Uwajimaya will no longer be part of a mixed use project in Old Town Portland that has been in the works for years.

“It was decision time for Uwajimaya (officials) and they decided at this time they just couldn’t do it financially,” [property owner David] Gold said. “It’s not the decision we want, but we understand because times are hard for a lot of people right now.”

According to a letter sent to the PDC and city officials, Uwajimaya CEO Tomoko Moriguchi Matsuno said, “The principal reasoning for our withdrawal from the project has to do with the slow recovery from the economic downturn of the past few years.”
