Fire investigators think a stray bottle rocket landed on the roof of the Alberta Central building late July 4, causing an estimated $100,000 in fire and water damage to several businesses, including a cafe, a pilates center and a Web design office. Aviary, a creative small-plates restaurant that opened to acclaim in February, was hard-hit, suffering damage to its ventilation system and gas lines.
On Thursday, Pok Pok chef Andy Ricker and ChefStable restaurateur Kurt Huffman reached out to Aviary’s three co-chefs — Sarah Pliner, Jasper Chen and Kat Whitehead — to offer them the use of Ping, Ricker and Huffman’s Chinatown restaurant. The Aviary crew could reopen at Ping on Sundays and Mondays, when the restaurant is usually closed.
The Aviary chefs quickly said yes.
