Portland General Electric is starting its first automated demand response program for business customers to pitch in during times of peak energy demand.

Customers who participate would get an upfront payment plus compensation for reducing their power consumption during peak demand by dimming lights or turning down air conditioning.

Such programs are part of the move toward a smarter grid. Automated demand response is fairly common in the Mid-Atlantic and East Coast states, but it’s the first time it will be available in Oregon.

Under the terms of the Energy Partner program, PGE can call on participants to reduce their energy use with a 10-minute notice for up to four hours at a time. Customers can be called on to reduce once per day on up to two consecutive days with a maximum of 15 events or 40 total hours for each of the peak seasons — the hottest days of summer and the coldest days of winter.
