19 percent of private-sector employers in Oregon plan to hire more workers in the next six months, according to the second Future Hiring Survey by Oregon’s Employment Department.

The survey asked 5,150 private-sector employers from at least 350 occupations, including retail, farming, office work, teaching and food service, about their hiring expectations during the next few months. While a majority of 62 percent said they would not change their total number of employees, 19 percent of businesses expect to increase their staffing during the next six months.

Though businesses may have begun to recover from the recession, some employers are still wary about hiring additional staff, according to the survey. Almost half of the non-hiring employers surveyed said that they were not hiring because of the economy.

According to the survey, there will be no easy pickings any time soon, but things maybe be starting to look up. The same survey in the fall 2010 found that more employers were cutting staff than adding positions, and 67 percent of employers said that the economy was preventing them from hiring.
