Entrepreneurs Margaret Magruder and Joel Pynch spent nearly a decade researching alternative uses for their sheep herd’s wool before settling on wool insulation for houses.

“The world wool market was down, and we’re both sheep producers,” said Magruder. “We wanted to continue being in business.”

Stephen Aiguier, founder of Green Hammer, a green building company in Portland, had also been reading up on the natural benefits of using wool for insulation, a common practice in Northern Europe.

“It’s already fire retardant, it already has antimicrobial properties, it lends itself to a more natural building process,” Aiguier said.

He was pleased to find that an Oregon company was making a go of marketing natural wool insulation in the United States and signed on last year to become a vendor.
