Canadian shoemaker John Fluevog will open its 7th U.S. retail store on April 1 in downtown Portland.

For more than 40 years, Fluevog has been designing imaginative, creative, funky, super-retro boots and shoes. Skeptics may question whether the Canadian soul can harbor any funky-super-retro, but Fluevog’s whimsically named lines for men and women stand as an effective counterargument.

The Portland store, the seventh U.S. outlet for the brand, is the first retail tenant in a deep, tall space on Southwest Stark Street between 12th and 13th avenues just west of Jake’s Famous Crawfish restaurant.

That intersection at the confluence with West Burnside Street is roaring out of the recession. The latest McMenamins project, the Crystal Hotel, opens May 3 across Southwest Stark from the Fluevog store. The Indigo condominium tower is around the corner. And workers have been crawling in and around the two-story brick structure once called the Weave Building at 1308 W. Burnside St. to convert it to retail and office space.
