Government officials met in Portland with entrepreneurs interested in selling sustainable products and services to talk about going green.
A group from the General Services Administration, the government procurement agency, met with businesspeople at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. The officials asked for ideas on how to encourage or require vendors to conduct inventories of greenhouse-gas emissions that result from making and selling products.
The GSA officials said Tuesday they would collect more suggestions and recommend ways to green the federal supply chain and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They have a large area of opportunity: the federal government employs more than 1.8 million civilians, operates more than 600,000 vehicles and occupies nearly 500,000 buildings — many of which, presumably, could shrink their environmental footprints.
