The number of people receiving Oregon’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is growing, and businesses are responding.

More and more stores are applying to be able to accept the cards for SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp program.

Real Deal Grocery, owned by Steve Miller and Erik Moorhouse, planned to accept Oregon Trail cards when they opened their store, but the process to get things in order took longer than expected. It was not until after Thanksgiving that Real Deal Grocery was able to take the cards.

“A lot of people were asking for it,” Miller said. “It was something we planned on from the start because we are aimed at a customer base of people who need cheap groceries. And people using food stamps need cheap groceries the most.”
