Portland businessman Jim Houser sat with First Lady Michelle Obama during the President’s State of the Union address.

President Obama even singled out the auto repair shop owner during one part of his speech.

Houser, co-owner of the Hawthorne Auto Clinic, 4307 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd., was chosen for the honor because his small business benefited from President Obama’s health care plan. According to the White House, the auto repair shop owned by Houser and his wife, Liz Dally, is expected to save about $10,000 because of tax credits the business will get through the health care package.

Houser and Dally wrote in a May 2009 testimonial for U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer that the new health care law would allow the business to continue providing good benefits to its employees. Without it, they wrote, the business would be “at the mercy of insurance companies’ drive for profits.”
