The company hopes the new technology will lower the cost of fast computers.
The innovation could lead to more powerful supercomputers, according to the company, and also could accelerate consumer applications, such as transferring a movie onto a mobile device.
At current speeds of 50 gigabits per second — about five times faster than copper standards — the new silicon photonics technology could move a full, high-definition movie in one second over tiny optical fibers. Eventually Intel believes its technology could manage 1 terabit per second.
