When Budweiser took a not-so-subtle shot at craft brew aficionados during its Super Bowl ad, Oregonians took notice.
And for good reason, according to the trade news website Oregon Craft Beer: Portland is home to more breweries than any other city in the world.
According to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, there are 278 companies licensed to operate as a brewery in the state.

1. Coin Toss Brewing
Location: Oregon City
Launch: Slated to open in July
Backstory: Coin Toss is the brainchild of radio personality and (former) homebrewer, Tim Hohl, with professional assistance from “brewing royalty” Dave Fleming. The brewpub gets its name from the incident that gave Portland its name: a coin toss between Asa Lovejoy of Boston and Francis Pettygrove, originally from Portland, Maine.

2. Defiance Brewery
Location: The Dalles
Launch: Slated to open this summer
Backstory: Defiance Brewery will be the Dalles’ first brewery since 1916, when Columbia Brewery shut down. The current plan is to repurpose a more-than-a-century-old ice house at 208 Laughlin Street.

3. Leikam Brewing
Location: SE Portland
Launch: The nanobrewery is run by husband-and-wife Theo and Sonia Marie Leikam. The couple will ramp up production once it receives all the necessary permits from the city.
Backstory: Leikam is the first certified kosher brewery in Portland. It also utilizes a farm-to-pint glass model that encourages beer drinkers to sign up for its subscription service.
