Juniper is spreading quickly in Oregon, creating numerous environmental problems.
Most recently, Governor John Kitzhaber designated the Western Juniper Utilization Group’s efforts to thin juniper as an Oregon Solutions project. The effort includes more than 30 partners from the public sector, business community, and nonprofit organizations. The work will not only focus on correcting juniper removal, but the creation of sustainable juniper markets throughout Central and Eastern Oregon.
“By cutting the juniper and developing a market for it, we are ultimately going to be able to create a restoration economy,” said Greg Wolf, the governor’s intergovernmental and regional solutions director. “Not only can you use the wood for biomass, you can use it for furniture, for landscaping – just a wide variety of uses.”
