U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell visited Portland to announce $4.2 million for 22 conservation projects that will provide 600 jobs for young adults.

Three projects in Oregon will receive nearly $590,000, most notably for a five-week summer program that will employ 40 at-risk youth from Portland to build trails and improve habitat for salmon and trout in the Sandy River Basin.

The youth-employment push is part of the America’s Great Outdoors program launched by President Barack Obama in 2010. Young adults got hammered during the recession on the jobs front. Unemployment rates for the under-25 crowd stood at 16.2 percent this spring, more than twice the national average, according to a recent independent report by the Economic Policy Institute.
