Six Portland-area animal shelters banded together in 2006 to reduce the number of cats and dogs they euthanize, and the program was a success.

On Monday, they announced a huge success: The coalition has cut the number of animals killed by 65 percent, from almost 18,000 in 2006 to about 6,000 in 2012.

In 2006, the six shelters killed 40 percent of the dogs and cats they took in. Last year, the rate dropped to 19 percent. That makes Portland one of the safest communities nationwide, according to Rich Avanzino, president Maddie’s Fund, a San Francisco Bay Area group focused on saving shelter animals.
