The percentage of workers in unions is dropping across the nation, with Oregon’s membership declining at an even steeper rate.

The percent of wage and salary workers nationwide who were members of a union was 11.8 percent in 2011 and 11.3 percent in 2012, representing a 0.5 percentage point drop.

In Oregon, those same figures dropped from 17.1 percent in 2011 to 15.7 percent last year; a 1.4 percentage point decrease.

The report did not go into detail for the reasons behind the decreases, but overall employment in relevant industries might be a contributing factor. Oregon’s total employment dropped an estimated 48,000 between the two years, while the number of employees who were union members decreased an estimated 30,000 people.
