A Southern Oregon garden seed distribution center will close by the end of the year, part of a sale resulting in 199 layoffs nationwide.

Ferry-Morse Seed Co. notified state employment officials that it was purchased May 18 by Seed Holdings. The new owner immediately terminated half of Ferry-Morse employees nationally. The White City plant is expected to close by Dec. 31, and all remaining employees will be terminated at that time, according to a letter from a company official to Oregon officials.

Ferry-Morse, based in Fulton, Ky., opened the facility in 2009, saying it would serve as its first West Coast warehouse and distribution center. The company anticipated the center would reduce transportation costs and time needed to serve West Coast customers such as Lowe’s and Home Depot.
